Exploring the Beauty of DNA – Spiral Structure Model

This time, I took on the challenge of crafting a DNA double-helix model! While genetics is far from my area of expertise, I stumbled upon a book about DNA and became fascinated by the elegant spiral structure. I thought it would be exciting to bring this form to life, and thus, this project was born. The intricate geometry of the DNA’s base pairing and the mystique of its double-helix form captivated me throughout the design process.

This piece invites you to hold it, examine it, and perhaps display it as a thought-provoking decorative object.

Key Features

1. DNA Helix Structure and Base Pairs

I knew about DNA’s double-helix structure in passing, but I didn’t fully understand its details. Determined to create an accurate model, I borrowed specialized textbooks from the library and studied the finer points of its design.

DNA’s helix alternates between major grooves and minor grooves, giving it a slightly shifted appearance as it spirals. Each full rotation measures 34 Å (angstroms). The base pairs connecting the two strands are held together by hydrogen bonds, and I meticulously modeled these connections to capture the structure’s essence. (See product photos for reference!)

2. Cylinder and Contained Liquid

The cylindrical container, sourced from Amazon, was carefully chosen after testing several options. This specific size and design beautifully complement the DNA model inside, enhancing its visual appeal and mystique.

The cylinder is filled with silicone oil, a substance commonly used in cosmetics and known for its safety and stability (flash point 330°C, viscosity 500cs). A touch of air bubbles was intentionally added, so you can flip the cylinder and enjoy the mesmerizing movement of the bubbles. (Leak-tested for your peace of mind!)

Important Notes:

The cylinder cap is removable by twisting counterclockwise but is not glued shut. To avoid spills, do not open the cap, as the oil is filled to the brim.

Store safely, especially in households with small children or pets.

In case of accidental exposure:

If ingested, seek medical attention immediately without attempting to induce vomiting.

If the oil contacts your eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water for 15 minutes and consult a doctor.

3. Handcrafted Label

The label was also handmade! Printed on a silver sheet with a waterproof protective layer, it is resistant to smudging from water or friction, ensuring durability and a polished finish.
